Frostgrave Into the Breeding Pits by Joseph A McCullough published by Osprey Games review
Frostgrave has been a huge hit, and earned itself a well deserved award as best miniature game at UK Games expo this year.
Its an excellent fantasy tabletop skirmish campaign game, that can be played as fast one off games, or a linked campaign full of advancements and depth. Take a look here to learn more about Frostgrave, and its previous expansion Thaw of the Lich Lord.
Now its time to take a look at the latest expansion Into the Breeding Pits!
This is full colour, and soft back, and as with the previous releases is wonderfully produced, full of beautiful colour artwork, which is a joy to look at.
Osprey say.......
With this new supplement for Frostgrave, players can lead their warbands into the vast network of catacombs, sewers, and dungeons that run underneath the Frozen City. It was in these dark confines that the ancient wizards known as Beastcrafters experimented on living creatures, creating strange hybrids and deadly monsters, many of which still roam the forgotten passageways. Along with a host of new scenarios, treasures, soldiers, and creatures, the book also contains rules for the traps and secret passages that are often found in the dungeons. With wonderful and rare magical treasures to be discovered, will players risk taking their warbands down into the Breeding Pits?
But what will it add to your games? join us as we descend into the depths........
The main focus in this book is taking the battles under ground in the Frostgrave world, be it dungeons, or sewer tunnels , it provides an extra way to play. Being underground it cuts down on your vision reducing line of sight, which means you will need to be tactically flexible to deal with it.
This is covered in a couple of different ways, firstly you can set up as normal, but it counts as underground, so imagine building a table full of dividing walls. Or you can set up using classic dungeon tiles, fighting your way through them with tight packed rooms full of action, and traps.... Did I mention there are traps? well there are. There is a large amount of traps worked into the rules to provide some unpleasant surprises for those wandering the undersides of the city. Though of course, you may find a secret passage instead and surprise your opponent.
The book provides us with 5 new scenarios to try out all following a linked story, with new special rules for them, and of course all sorts of new treasures to find. Some of those treasures are going to be excellent finds for your warband, and create another way to further personalise their loadouts.
What would a Frostgrave book be without new goodies.... and this one provides. You get a couple of new soldier types for your warband themed for fighting in the tight confines of the underworld, and they may well help you out with those traps.
We also get new magic........ now I cant go too much into depth on this yet (got to leave some surprises for you all right!?) The Beastcrafter. This is a series of spells in multiple levels your wizard can potentially learn that will help your affinity with animals, with abilities like increasing your number of animal companions, to gaining features of beasts that can help you in different ways from combat to exploration. (this is really cool but I wont spoil it)
Of course the bestiary get a horde of new creatures to battle, including Gnolls.... yes Gnolls.... take a look at the Gnickstarter to see a lovely looking plastic box set of them. There are plenty of other creatures down there as well ranging from poisoned fungus, to burrowing beasts, the underside of the city is no safer then the top!
.All in all, an excellent book for the price, giving you plenty of options to add to your Frostgrave game, and believe me, the new spells are worth it alone! let alone the underground fighting and dungeon adventures, plus a while horde of creatures in the bestiary. Its a must buy for a Frostgrave fan as it adds plenty, but you do not have to use it all at once, add some bits here and there, increase your options, work a whole underground section into your normal campaign, it does not replace anything, only enhance it
The best way to pick up a copy is joining the Gnickstarter here which will give you all sorts of other goodies too. If you want to wait and grab it at retail it comes in at a bargain priced £9.99, and for all you get in it, it can not be beaten.
